Like many an MMO, EverQuest II owes its heritage to the text-based MUDs and MOOs of yesteryear. As a result, text communication and game client control remain key features to the environment.

The main type of key-driven system commands in EQ2 and other games have come to be known as ’slash’ commands, owing to the fact that they begin with a forward slash: ‘/’. This character signals to the game that the player is issuing a command rather than typing chat text, pressing a movement key, or casting a spell.

With that said, we present a few of EQ2’s lesser-known slash commands that you just might find useful…

As sometimes happens, a comment elsewhere inspires an article here.

This one started at Cameron Soderan’s “Random-Battle” blog, where an excellent discussion on virtual property evolved into a series of back and forth commentary eventually touching on whether or not gold buyers should be banned for disruptive gameplay.

To me, there’s little distinction between gold sellers and gold buyers in a game that allows neither.  If the rules say “don’t do it” and you then proceed to do what you’ve agreed not to do, then there should be no surprise at all when the ban hammer comes crashing down on your head.

Is Your Class Critical? April 2, 2008

A discussion I’ve started within my guild’s ranks addresses the idea of criticality, specifically in dealing with various classes for raids.  Which classes are “critical” to success and which ones are merely useful.  The question is important in class based raid content, but it’s still relevant within the larger context of class based games altogether.

To many players, this can be as much a serious discussion topic based purely on the emotional attachment many of us apply to our preferred classes.  No one likes to feel left out or less important, and the idea that class X is more highly desired on in a raid (or group) setting can set off a firestorm of commentary regarding game design and developers themselves.

Every year, more and more websites jump on the April Fool’s bandwagon.  Yesterday, we took Scott Jennings’ lead and took the day off (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).  There were only a few of the jokes which made me chuckle (most were simply irritating) and then during a short raid last night, we had this exquisite chest drop in Everquest II:

Gigglegibber Companion Cube

Ok, I’ll admit it.  We laughed.  We thought it was cute.  Several people wanted to actually build their very own Weighted Gigglegibber Companion Cube

You win this round, SOE (though Blizzard was close with Bard Hero).  Good game.
