In the world of single player games, the game manual would often be your only source of knowledge about the game you were playing, and often times the only one you needed. When it comes to Massive Multiplier Online Games though, manuals are probably the most worthless thing packaged with the game. These are games that by their very nature change often, and when not changing are typically adding new content. This typically means that if you want to find out about the game you are playing, you will need to look elsewhere. Fan sites, the games website and forums all can hold a wealth of information for the players that know where to look.

Member of the Legion of the White Rose

All attacks will be countered by myself or another member of my guild.  Multi-attacks or pillages will result in guild retaliation.  You have been warned.

-Original description for Legion of the White Rose members, Archmage, Server I

I didn’t say anything here last week, but my guild quietly passed its ninth anniversary on October 4.  It’s a pretty big milestone for any organization, but for an online gaming guild, I find it particularly impressive.

It also speaks to the concepts I often raise regarding gaming guilds, particularly when I point out how many of my current members have either -A- been with the guild for multiple years (not just months or a year, but years - plural) or -B- left the guild at some point only to return to us at a much later date.

In fact, in a bit of a fanciful twist of fate, one of our former officers and raid leaders who had left us just prior to Echoes of Faydwer’s launch, logged back in on October 4th to ask to be readmitted to the guild.  It was a nice surprise for many of our veterans to see an old friend return to us after a year away.

But that’s the draw of a good guild, isn’t it…

Rome Wasn’t Built In a Day October 10, 2007

Well, it’s official.  Gods and Heroes has been cancelled.

Less than three months after being showcased as one of SOE’s upcoming gems at this year’s SOE FanFaire, Perpetual Entertainment has announced that the development of the game has been ceased to allow for all company resources to be focused on their Star Trek Online MMO.

The Perpetual team is faced with a unique challenge of simultaneously developing both Gods & Heroes and Star Trek Online in addition to growing our Online Game Platform business. After assessing all of Perpetual’s opportunities, we have made the decision to put the development of Gods & Heroes on indefinite hold.

Moving forward, we’re shifting our collective focus, resources and development efforts to Perpetual’s Platform Services division and Star Trek Online, thereby ensuring that the game lives up to the high level of expectation set by the dedicated Star Trek fan base.

So you thought that World of Warcraft in a South Park episode was a marketing coup, eh?  How about World of Warcraft during a football game.

That’s right.  World of Warcraft and Toyota apparently teamed up to produce a Toyota truck commercial inside World of Warcraft which played DURING the football games this past weekend.

Tell me if the truck “driver” doesn’t sound like Dane Cook?

Extra levels, more quests, news lands to explore, new abilities, new races, and sometimes even new classes. To sum it up, more content. That is what I would like to take a look at today, additional content, and how the companies that bring us these games make that content last.

Are expansions essential? Do we need this additional content added to the MMO’s we play? I think we do, after all you can only play through the existing content so many times before you start to become bored with it, and move on to other games or other activities. So in an effort to keep people playing, and to bring players back to their games, expansions are created.

San Diego Sinkhole! October 4, 2007

Normally we don’t comment much on news regarding the weather or natural disasters, but seeing how this particular event occured just outside of San Diego, it seems pretty relevant to us.

 Per CNN.com:

LA JOLLA, California (CNN) — More than 100 homes in an upscale San Diego community were evacuated after a sinkhole about 60 yards wide pulled the earth from beneath a three-lane road and some of the multimillion-dollar homes that adorn it.

To all our friends at SOE, Areae, and other studios in the San Diego area, we’re thinking of you.  (Not that we’re TOO worried seeing how expensive the houses are - we all know devs are broke. ;)  )

Had enough of the Shard of Fear?  Neither had we.

So we cornered Everquest II’s Community Manager, Craig “Grimwell” Dalrymple, who was kind enough to confirm some facts for us here at Clockwork Gamer, and to provide two more exclusive screenshots of the upcoming Shard of Fear.

First, we wanted to confirm when exactly we might see the Shard of Fear on live servers.  Per Craig, “The Shard of Fear is currently scheduled to go live with Game Update 39 on October 17th. While there is always the chance that the update, or the shard will be pushed back, this is our current goal.”

When we pressed him for more details on the Shard itself, he was a bit more evasive.  Unwilling to divulge too many specifics, he basically confirmed much of what we already knew, that the Shard “will be a single group instance” and that it was, in fact, “persistant”.
Enjoy!

Who is this? October 1, 2007

Hello,

I was asked to introduce myself shortly after Kendricke and Zobek agreed to let me write for Clockwork Gamer. I thought about it for a while, what to write, what was important? I wasn’t sure if I should give everyone background on the person behind the computer, or if it would be more appropriate to explain my experiences with Massive Multiplayer Online Games. In the end I thought it best perhaps to do both.

Let me start with the person behind the computer. My name is Thomas, I am a 25 year old programmer working with databases and web programming. I graduated about 3 years ago with a degree in computer science. I married my lovely wife just after graduating, and we are the not so proud owners of one crazy dog. Yes thats right, he is spoiled and disobedient.

Enough about my “real” life though, on to the more interesting question of what makes me qualified to write for a gaming web log about my experiences and thoughts? Well not much really. I have played Everquest 2 for a few months now, and before that I played Eve Online, World of Warcraft and Planetside. I never played the original Everquest, so my take on Everquest 2 is completely unaffected by previous experience with the lore, legend and even game play of the original game. Still I like to think that I am smart enough to have an opinion on almost anything, yet I have gotten wise enough to realize that opinion isn’t always right.

So what I hope to present in my articles is just that, the opinion on a gamer who has played his fair share of games in the past, and will continue to play games in the future. This opinion won’t always be right, since it is opinion after all. I do hope that will leave plenty of room for people to form their own thoughts and ideas about the topics at hand, and to disagree with me when it is needed.
